Curly girls, I get it. Between getting two little ones ready in the morning, showing up on set on time, and going through makeup, my own hair is always the last thing that gets attention. And what that usually meant: hair in a bun. Again. Because the alternative — actually trying something with my curls — almost always ended in disappointment.
I always thought my hair was just difficult. Naturally curly, naturally frizzy, and completely unmanageable the moment there was even a hint of humidity in the air. I'd try products, they'd work for a few hours, then the frizz would come back and I'd be back to the bun. On set I always used hairspray to tame the little flyaway curly strands — not ideal, and honestly not great for your hair either.
And if your hair feels tight and dry after washing, it's probably not your curls. You're just using the wrong products. I know that now. It took me far too long to figure that out.
I never wore my hair curly for a night out. All my friends would always say: 'Why don't you wear your hair curly?' And I just didn't feel confident. I was sure it would end up like Monica from Friends — bigger and bigger with every hour that passed. Or, honestly, more Hagrid than anything else. Which wasn't far from the truth.
