It was as if they appeared overnight: my curls.
Where I once had long straight hair that I brushed out beautifully every day as a little girl, I suddenly had an exploded mop after brushing. As my hormones changed, my hair started changing with them.
My sister Katja had always had curls; in her hair you could clearly see our Surinamese roots. But with me, our Chinese great-grandmother came through more. So I'd never had curls in my life — and suddenly I did.
I had absolutely no idea what to do with this "new hair." I didn't actually want curls at all. Found it a hassle. So I mostly ignored it and put my hair in a bun.

Until my stylist said: 'Birgit, you have curls whether you like it or not, so you need to start using products developed for curly hair.' And off I went — down the slippery path of curl products.
One product made my hair far too heavy, because I have a lot of hair but it's not that thick. Other products gave me hard curls. Some I really didn't like the smell of. And others felt very greasy.
I've followed so many different "routines" I went mad. And meanwhile I was on film sets, in the theatre, in front of the camera — while my hair was a surprise every wash day.
You know how it goes. The drawer full of half-used bottles. The slow, expensive realisation that every new product makes exactly the same promises. And almost never delivers on any of them.
